Practical Advice

The correct tooth brushing method is from the gums and out, not only on the vestibular surfaces but also on the lingual or palatine surfaces. The anterior posterior movement (back and forth) is only for the oclusal surfaces. The combination of a correct brushing technique plus an adequate tooth brush will result in a good oral hygene and at the same time, a good dental health.

The election of the adequate toothbrush depends upon the personal oral conditons:

There are toothbrushes for normal hard and soft tissues, for delicate gums, for orthodontic patients, for sensitive cervical areas, for patients moving from a periodontal stage to another, etc.

The tooth brushing techinique is always the same, considering that the toothbrush is always held in a horizontal position except in the anterior areas where the brush is held vertically so that its head starts cleaning from the cervical areas to the incisal areas, one by one. It´s important to have a professional chekup every six or twelve months depending on the susceptibility of calculus or cavity formation for each patient.

It´s also very important to have good food habits to make sure you don´t only ingest a nutritionally balanced diet (fruits, vegetables, proteins, lactic products, carbohydrates) but also make sure that there won´t be any left overs, specially glucose ones, that along with the bacteria that normally live in our mouth, decompose the enamel and sometimes even the dentine of the dental pieces. Good food habits in pregnant women, as well as in children up to twelve years old, require the ingestion of lactic products, vitamins and minerals that contain calcium necessary for the dentinary germ formation.
